A new study by the Irish Medicines Board (IMB) and the Medical College of Ireland, Ireland’s largest clinical practice, is to test a new topical formulation of Zovirax cream to treat herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV).
HSV-2, HSV-1, HSV-2 and varicella-zoster virus (VZV) are all HSV infections, and the virus can cause painful lesions and outbreaks in the genital area, but they are not common in Ireland.
A new study is published in the journalAnnals of Internal Medicine. This study is a new topical formulation of Zovirax cream that is expected to be the first oral antiviral treatment for viral infections.
The cream was made from a cream developed by the Irish Medicines Board, and tested in a double-blind study in five healthy subjects to determine the effects of the cream on the HSV-2, HSV-1 and VZV, and HSV-2 and varicella-zoster virus in the oral mucosa.
The study is part of a new treatment programme for herpes labialis (HLAD).
In this study, researchers will apply the new topical cream and oral antiviral treatment to HSV-2 and VZV in the oral mucosa, in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study.
The first study is being done to examine the efficacy and safety of a topical treatment of HSV-2 and VZV in the oral mucosa.
